According to reports, the gunman took his own life – no other injuries were reported. It happened around 8 am CST on the sixth floor of the busy Perry-Castaneda Library. ABC News says the gunman, wearing a ski mask, entered the library and “fired several shots” before committing suicide. CNN reported that the gunman was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. Classes at the University of Texas were canceled for the day and the university issued a warning for students on campus to “stay indoors” – telling anyone off campus to “stay away” as police investigated the possibility of a second suspect. A similar message was sent via e-mail to University of Texas students and staff members. University of Texas professor Randall Wilhite had an up close encounter with the gunman. Wilhite told CNN that he was pulling up near the scene in his car when the gunman “stood right in front of me and didn’t stop running but turned in my direction, fired three shots into the ground to the left of my car and kept running. I wasn’t sure it was real until I saw the bullets strike the ground to my left.” The identity of the gunman was not immediately available and authorities were said to be investigating a possible motive for his actions.
